Building a new UX team within Northwell has been an awesome challenge that gave me an opportunity to think deeply about how to create paths for individual growth and create ways to have meaningful career development conversations that felt truly valuable.
Having been with Northwell for 10 years I became very familiar with their Annual Performance Review process, and while it is well structured at a high level, what it lacked for us as a UX design team is categories that are reflective of the competencies and skills needed to excel in this creative space.
To better facilitate my performance & growth conversations with my team – and to give each team member a clear guide to how they can grow and reflect on their skills – I created a 15 section UX Career Ladder that includes clear requirements for what it will take to get to the next level.
The UX Career Ladder is broken down into:
- Description
- To reach this level
- Visual Design
- UX Design
- Patterns
- Product Thinking
- Process
- Toolkit
- Transparency
- Data
- Fluency
- Communication
- Mentorship
- Leadership
- Culture
