As a department that is delivering digital features to users in the health care space it is extremely important that we are being conscious of accessibility in the products we deliver. Not only because we are legally bound to do so – but it is just the right thing to do!
When I joined Northwell’s Digital Patient Experience team as the Director of User Experience everyone had a general understanding that accessibility was important – but what did accessibility actually mean and why was it so important? To help every get a deeper understanding of accessibility I organized and hand-on workshop that truly put our team members in the shoes of our patients who may have challenges that they experience in their lives.
I brought in one of our vendor partners, Phase 2 Technology, to lead this workshop. We recorded all of the presentations to use as training material for future new hires, and we organized deeper dives on specific topics with the appropriate teams.
